Freeze dryer won't pull a vacuum? What to check first

Short answer: Most vacuum errors come from an air leak or the pump. Before you call, check that the drain valve is fully closed, the door and door seal are clean and sealing, the vacuum hose is tight at both ends with undamaged O-rings, and the pump is plugged into the dryer, switched on and, if it uses oil, filled with clean oil. Still failing? Contact the maker; under warranty, go to them first.

These are the owner checks Harvest Right lists on its support page and in its owner's manual. Other brands: follow your manual. Nothing here asks you to open the machine or the pump.

The checklist

Turn off and unplug the freeze dryer before you clean it or take off the hose, and don't touch the pump until it has cooled. Harvest Right's owner's manual (opens in a new tab) says to unplug before cleaning or making repairs, and warns the pump can reach 160 °F.
  • Drain valve closed. The small handle should sit perpendicular to the drain tube. An open valve causes a vacuum leak.
  • Door and seal clean. Clean the door and the black rubber gasket. Harvest Right says to rinse the gasket with warm water and let it air dry, not wipe it with a cloth, since lint can spoil the seal.
  • Door fully closed. When it's sealed you should see a thin line around the middle of the gasket where it presses on the door. Make sure the shelf unit isn't touching the gasket.
  • Hose tight, O-rings whole. Take the vacuum hose off at both ends, check the rubber O-rings for damage, and reconnect. Harvest Right's owner's manual says hand-tightening is generally adequate, but you may gently use pliers or vice grips if needed. Don't add Teflon tape; it can interfere with the O-ring.
  • Pump on and connected. The pump should be plugged into the back of the freeze dryer and switched on.
  • Oil pumps: oil level and condition. Check the level in the sight glass and change cloudy or dirty oil. Use only the maker's approved oil, don't overfill, and skip after-market pump accessories or modifications; Harvest Right's warranty excludes them.
  • Chamber dry. Defrost between every food batch. The chamber and shelf must be free of ice and water before the next one.

Then watch the pressure

During a normal batch, Harvest Right's owner's manual says drying starts once pressure reaches 500 mTorr; if it hasn't after 30 minutes, check for leaks. If the checks don't fix it, the maker's technicians want your log files. Copy them to a small blank USB drive from the machine's USB port and send them with your serial number.

When to stop and call

If the checklist doesn't fix it, contact your machine's maker. Under warranty, go to them first; outside repairs may affect coverage. Harvest Right takes tickets or calls at 801-386-8960 and says it charges a fee for units out of warranty. Out of warranty, our repair, parts and supplies list has repair shops and parts stores, each checked on its own site.

Some errors aren't the machine at all. A load that never finishes drying is a different problem; see still soft or chewy? and how long a batch takes.

Common questions

What causes a freeze dryer vacuum error?

Usually air getting in or a pump problem. Harvest Right's support-page checklist and owner's manual point to the drain valve, the door gasket and door seal, the vacuum hose connections and their gaskets, and the pump: plugged in, switched on and, for oil pumps, filled with clean oil.

How long should it take to pull a vacuum?

During a normal batch, Harvest Right's owner's manual says drying starts once pressure reaches 500 mTorr; if it hasn't after 30 minutes, check for leaks. If the checks don't fix it, its support team asks for your log files.

Should I fix it myself or call the maker?

Under warranty, contact your machine's maker first; outside repairs may affect coverage. The checks on this page are the ones Harvest Right asks owners to try first. Leave anything beyond them to the maker or a repair shop.

What does Harvest Right support need from me?

Your name, the serial number from the back of the unit, and the machine's log files, which you copy to a small blank USB drive and email to the technician, according to Harvest Right's support page.

Owner checks only. Anything beyond them, like adjusting the door hinges, replacing parts or opening the pump, belongs with the maker's support team or a repair shop. Other brands: follow your manual. Fully Dry is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by Harvest Right, Blue Alpine, Stay Fresh or any other freeze-dryer maker.
